Janet Daby MP has backed Cancer Research UK’s Unlock Cancer Breakthroughs campaign, supporting Dr Scott Arthur MP’s application for a Backbench Business debate on the future of UK cancer research.

The campaign calls for faster clinical trials, stronger support for international research talent and sustained long-term investment so that new tests, treatments and breakthroughs reach patients sooner.

Janet Daby MP said: “Cancer affects families in every community, including across Lewisham East. Behind every diagnosis is a person, a family and a future that depends on faster progress in prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The UK is in a golden age of cancer research, with advances in genomics, data, AI and personalised medicine bringing discoveries within reach that once seemed decades away. But breakthroughs only save lives if they reach patients quickly.

That is why I was pleased to support Cancer Research UK’s Unlock Cancer Breakthroughs campaign and Dr Scott Arthur MP’s application for a Parliamentary debate on UK cancer research.

I welcome the Labour Government’s progress in reducing set-up times for commercial clinical trials and its record investment in research and development at the 2025 Spending Review. We must now build on that progress by ensuring non-commercial trials are not left behind, supporting world-leading research talent and sustaining long-term investment in cancer research.

For people in Lewisham East and across the country, this is about earlier diagnosis, better treatments and giving more families more time with the people they love.”
