It was fitting that my first speaking engagement was at the BAME Labour Windrush event; marking 70 years since the first arrival of workers from Commonwealth countries to the UK.
This generation of pioneers – which included my parents – have made an immeasurable contribution to our country. The Windrush generation left their homes to build a better life for their families, and supported our country at at time of severe labour shortages. I was delighted to join friends and colleagues to celebrate this important milestone.
We must work to protect and defend the rights of these citizens. The Government must urgently establish a route to clarifying the status of the Windrush migrants, the burden of proof should not be placed on them.
