I recently had the opportunity to raise the issue of the Government’s Female Offenders Strategy, which is failing miserably to find alternative ways for women to serve sentences other than in prison.
Women, especially mothers, do best when they are not separated from their family and community. This method is best for their rehabilitation, their children, and better value for the tax payer.
View the exchange below.
For women committing minor crimes, community-based sentences are more beneficial for their children, their own rehabilitation, & better value for the tax payer.
Why, then, is the Govt pledging to put £150m into more women's prison places? It just doesn't make sense. @WIP_live 🤦🏾♀️ pic.twitter.com/0QqONYZRCG
